The UWV Werkfit programme: what it is and for whom

A Werkfit programme from UWV helps you get ready for paid work when applying for jobs is still a step too far. You work on your workload capacity, your employee skills and a clearer picture of which work suits you, so that you can then search for work in a focused way. The Werkfit programme is intended for people with a UWV benefit who cannot yet start work directly. This article explains what a Werkfit programme is, who it is for and how it differs from a return-to-work programme.

What is a Werkfit programme?

A Werkfit programme is a reintegration programme that UWV purchases from a specialised provider. The goal is in the name: you become fit for work. Unlike a programme that guides you straight into a job, the Werkfit programme focuses on preparation. You first build a solid base before you enter the labour market.

The Werkfit programme usually centres on three components: strengthening your employee skills, improving your personal effectiveness and mapping which work is feasible. A coach looks together with you at what you can do, what gives you energy and which barriers exist. This connects with reintegration, because second-track reintegration is also about finding work that suits your abilities and workload capacity.

It is important to know that the Werkfit programme is not a training course and not a guarantee of a job. It is targeted preparation, in which you work step by step toward the point where applying becomes feasible. UWV pays for the programme and, together with you, chooses a suitable reintegration provider. The guidance is personal and flexible: the pace and content adapt to your recovery and capacity, so you are not asked for more than you can give.

Who is the Werkfit programme for?

The Werkfit programme is intended for people who receive a UWV benefit and are not (yet) able to apply for jobs directly. Think of a WGA benefit, a Sickness Benefit or a Wajong benefit. UWV decides whether a Werkfit programme is suitable, usually based on a conversation with an occupational expert or your contact person.

You are especially eligible for a Werkfit programme if there is still a distance to the labour market that you want to reduce first. For example because you have been out of work for a long time, because you need to adjust to a medical hours limitation, or because you are looking for a direction that suits your current capacity. So the programme is not for those already ready to apply, but for those who first want to grow in confidence, structure and work rhythm. What do you do in a Werkfit programme?

Within a Werkfit programme you work step by step on the things you need in order to work later. What you do exactly is tailored and depends on your situation, but most programmes contain these building blocks:

  • Strengthening employee skills: keeping appointments, cooperating, receiving feedback and building a work rhythm.
  • Increasing personal effectiveness: dealing with stress, spreading your energy and guarding your limits within your capacity.
  • Clarifying your career picture: exploring which work suits you, given your abilities, interests and limitations.
  • Gaining practical experience: sometimes through a work placement, so you can practise in a real work environment.

A coach or reintegration coach supports you with personal conversations and concrete exercises. The pace of the Werkfit programme matches what you can handle, so you grow step by step without relapsing. At the end of the programme, the aim is that you are ready for the next phase: searching for work in a focused way.

During the Werkfit programme you stay in regular contact with your coach and sometimes with UWV, so progress stays visible and the plan can be adjusted. If you notice that one component is too demanding, the pace is adapted rather than pushed through. That flexibility is exactly the strength: you build a base solid enough to hold down a job later, instead of starting quickly and dropping out again.

The official rules and current amounts or deadlines are available at UWV about reintegration. These can change, so always check them at the source itself for a concrete situation.

From Werkfit to work

The big difference between a Werkfit programme and a return-to-work programme lies in the timing and the goal. The Werkfit programme prepares you, while a return-to-work programme actively guides you toward a concrete job, with vacancy searching, applying and networking. In practice these programmes often follow each other: first you become fit for work, then you take the step to paid work.

Not everyone needs a Werkfit programme. If you are already ready to apply for jobs, a return-to-work programme is often more suitable. If you are still caught up in recovery, the Werkfit programme gives you room to build a solid base first. Your coach and UWV decide together with you which order best fits your situation.
