What exactly happens during a reintegration process?

Meta Marzguioui - de Zeeuw 7 April 2026

A second track reintegration process consists of several phases aimed at returning to work with another employer. The process starts as soon as it is no longer possible to return to your own organization. Employers usually use a specialized reintegration agency for this purpose. The process is customized, but often follows a fixed structure.

How does a second track process work in practice?

One 2nd track route usually consists of the following parts:

1. Intake and introduction

The candidate meets the reintegration counselor. An initial picture is being formed of resilience, wishes, and opportunities in the labor market.

2. Self-analysis and orientation

The employee examines his or her qualities, motives and work values. Career tests, coaching and self-reflection are common here.

3. Labour market orientation

The candidate explores sectors and occupations that suit his or her opportunities. This helps to set realistic goals.

4. Job counseling

Professional help with preparing a resume, cover letter and preparing for job interviews. Often combined with networking strategies.

5. Job hunting

The reintegration counselor actively helps you find vacancies and approach employers.

6. (Ro) education or training

If necessary, a training program will be used to increase the chance of suitable work.

7. Trial placement or work experience place

The candidate gets the opportunity to temporarily work for a new employer while retaining benefits.

8. Aftercare and relapse prevention

After placement, the agency offers support to ensure a smooth transition to paid work.

What is the purpose of a second track route?

The main goal is to find sustainable, appropriate work with another employer. In addition, the process helps with:

  • Restoring the work rhythm
  • Increasing self-confidence
  • Limiting long-term unemployment
  • Preventing wage sanctions

Summary

  • A second track process consists of intake, self-examination, guidance and placement
  • The process is customized and usually takes 6-12 months
  • Goal: suitable work with another employer after a long illness
