Career coaching: professional guidance for your career

What is career coaching?

Career coaching is a series of sessions with the same coach, usually five to eight, spread over a few months. You examine what you can do, what you want and how much of that is realistic. The difference with career advice is depth: not a one-off recommendation, but a programme in which you build something step by step.

What we often meet in Rotterdam is someone who knows exactly how their own company works and has no idea how they come across outside it. That can be learned. We start by breaking your experience down into skills and only then look at job titles. Useful too if you are considering changing jobs.

Career coaching in Rotterdam and nearby

Our location in Rotterdam is the Wijnhaven, between Blaak and the Maas. From there we work across the city and the surrounding municipalities. The labour market here is broader than the image of the port suggests: healthcare, education, professional services and trade together offer more work than industry does. What the conversations have in common is therefore not the sector but the question underneath: what can someone do, and where is that in demand.

Career questions in Rotterdam are rarely about ambition in the abstract. There is usually a concrete trigger: a reorganisation on the way, a manager leaving, work that starts to weigh more heavily, or the realisation that you have been doing the same thing for twelve years. Coaching turns that trigger into a choice rather than a reaction. Employers use it just as much, to keep someone inside the organisation rather than lose them.

About Rotterdam

Good to know about Rotterdam

Broader than the port

Healthcare, education, professional services and retail together account for most of the jobs in this region. Anyone coming out of industry is hired there more often than they expect.

Fifteen municipalities, one labour market

Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Capelle, Barendrecht, Spijkenisse and Dordrecht all sit within reach of the A15, A16, A20 and the metro network. Changing employer here rarely means moving house.

Wijnhaven, next to Blaak

Tram, metro and train stop around the corner, with car parks a short walk away. Anyone who would rather not travel does the sessions online, and that can be the whole programme.

The step into management

Team leader, coordinator or project lead is the most common next step in almost every sector. It calls for different behaviour, not more technical knowledge.

Looking internally first pays off

The larger employers here have more roles than an employee usually knows about. Before we look outside, we explore what is possible within.

Choosing costs less time than postponing

Most people come here after years of doubt. Five to eight sessions are enough to know where you want to go and what the first step is.

Coaching in two languages

Many people in this region do not speak Dutch at home. We coach in Dutch and English, including the CV and interview preparation.

What does career coaching at Care4Careers look like?

From trigger to plan

The content depends on your situation. Tailoring is the point of departure here.

Alongside you can see what the steps of an individual programme look like.

1

Intake meeting

You bring your question in and we see whether the fit is there. No obligation, at the Wijnhaven or online.

2

Who am I? Why do I work? What can I do?

You set out what you have done and what you have become good at, separate from the job titles that went with it.

3

What do I want?

You examine what you want and what you no longer want. Where it helps, we use an assessment to speed the conversation up.

4

Drawing up a plan of action

You test your direction against the reality of this region: which roles exist, at which companies, and what they take.

5

Realising the Next Step

You go out with a plan and keep your coach on hand for the first steps.

What you are working towards

There is a plan that can actually be carried out in this region, not just an idea that reads well on paper.

What we work on in Rotterdam

Four triggers we see most often here

Where we start is set by your trigger, not by your occupation. If you recognise yourself in one of these four, one conversation is usually enough to tell whether coaching suits you.

Doubts about the step into management

We test that ambition against practice: what the role demands, what it costs you, and what you have to let go. Then you know whether to go for it. As a deeper look we wrote changing jobs.

Twelve years in the same work, no view of the alternatives

Long service makes you blind to your own worth. For those reading on there is making a career switch.

Stuck at this level while the work itself suits you

Moving up does not always work with the same employer. We map out which step is within reach, inside or outside the organisation.

Out of steam, and ready for a different pace

Often it is not the work itself. Rotas, relations on the team and a lack of say often cost more energy than the work itself. A career scan gives that conversation something to hold on to.

When your work comes to a stop

A dismissal hits as an end point and in hindsight often turns out to be a point of departure.

Career coaching turns that change into something you can use. Instead of lingering in the uncertainty you focus with a coach on what is possible: new perspective, other chances and work that fits who you are now.

Many people run an outplacement programme alongside it to get to work actively. Outplacement supplies the structure and support to genuinely find new work.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about career coaching in Rotterdam

How do I know whether I need a coach or just another job?

If you already know where you want to go and only need the route, that is often a matter of applying. If you do not, without guidance you tend to circle the same ground. For those reading on there is what kind of work suits me.

What does it cost and will my employer contribute?

A career scan starts at 1,000 euro excluding VAT and a longer programme rises in proportion; the build-up is set out in the cost of career coaching. Many employers cover it from the development budget, see career guidance for employers.

How many sessions are there and over what period?

Usually five to eight, spread over a few months. That spacing is deliberate: between sessions you speak to other people and digest what was discussed. Anyone who only wants to test a decision is sometimes done after two.

Can I start without my employer knowing?

Yes. A programme you pay for yourself stays between you and your coach. If your employer contributes, discuss with your coach what does and does not go back before you start.

Do I have to come to Rotterdam?

Not necessarily; the sessions can run entirely online. Those who do come find us at the Wijnhaven next to Blaak. Many people do the first session on location and the rest digitally.

Where can I find Care4Careers in Rotterdam?

Wijnhaven 36, 3011 WS Rotterdam, next to Blaak station. We work by appointment, so call or email ahead and we will line up the right coach.

How far beyond Rotterdam do you travel?

All of Rijnmond and the Drechtsteden. In practice we see people from Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Capelle aan den IJssel, Barendrecht, Spijkenisse and Dordrecht, at our location or online.

We want to offer coaching to an employee. How does that work?

Career coaching is there for employees and employers alike. If you contribute as an employer, discuss with the employee and the coach what you do and do not get back. Clarity about that up front saves hesitation later.
