Career coaching: professional guidance for your career

What is career coaching?

A career programme consists of conversations with one coach, spread across several months. Between those conversations you do your own investigating: you talk to people doing the work you are weighing up, read vacancies critically and occasionally spend a day shadowing. The coach helps you order what that produced.

The result is a choice you can justify. Sometimes a move, sometimes an additional course, sometimes the conclusion that your present role works fine with a different remit. What a career adviser contributes is set out under the role of the career adviser.

Career coaching in Delft

Career coaching in Delft and nearby

The Delft location sits on the Marshalllaan, in the south of the city and a short cycle from Delft Campus station. Few cities of a hundred thousand hold such a sharp split in qualifications inside one labour market: doctoral researchers at Technopolis, engineers at the research institutes, and skilled trades in installation work and the Westland greenhouses. What a career move demands of you here depends on your qualification more than it would anywhere else.

The career question we hear most often in Delft begins with a degree that promised something. You picked a course, rolled into the matching work, and notice after eight or fifteen years that the path narrowed further than expected. Coaching then is not a reconsideration of your qualification but an examination of what you can do with it that you have not tried yet.

About Delft

Good to know about Delft

Research, industry and horticulture side by side

The TU, TNO and Deltares sit a few kilometres from the greenhouses of the Westland. Two labour markets that barely touch, while both are short of people.

Applying here often happens in English

At Technopolis and among the spin-offs English is the working language. That opens doors for internationals and occasionally closes them for Dutch candidates who never translated their CV.

The Hague and Rotterdam a quarter of an hour away

Both cities are nearer than most Delft residents realise. Widening the search to Zoetermeer, Rijswijk and Schiedam doubles the number of suitable roles in one move.

Marshalllaan, Delft Campus round the corner

You can park outside and the trains stop within walking distance. Would you rather not come in? Then we hold the session online; tell us your preference beforehand.

Look past the subject you chose at eighteen

A decision made in 2008 need not govern your career in 2026. What you have learned since carries more weight, except that it is rarely written down anywhere.

Use the network you already have

Around the TU and the institutes everyone knows everyone through projects and doctorates. That network delivers more than job boards, provided you use it deliberately.

Find out what a sideways step yields

From research to consulting, from delivery to teaching, from engineering to sales: none of these are demotions, they are different applications of the same craft.

What does career coaching at Care4Careers look like?

From background to next step

The content follows from your situation; we deliver tailoring, not a fixed programme.

Alongside you can see how an individual programme can look step by step.

1

Intake meeting

In the first hour-long conversation it becomes clear whether coaching suits your question, and if not, what does.

2

Who am I? Why do I work? What can I do?

In the weeks that follow your drivers and abilities come onto the table, separate from the course you once chose.

3

What do I want?

By halfway two or three directions remain that are serious enough to test in practice.

4

Drawing up a plan of action

After that you fix what you will do when, including the moment you look back to check it is working.

5

Realising the Next Step

Until the step is taken your coach stays available, even where that step turns out to be a conversation with your current employer.

What you are working towards

The degree you picked at eighteen no longer decides your career; what you have learned since weighs more.

Where you come from

Four backgrounds, four starting points

Where we begin depends on what you studied and on what the market currently does with it.

Explore your options outside academia

After a doctorate or a run of temporary appointments the question is rarely which vacancy, but which kind of organisation. Our article on this is called making a career switch.

Broaden your engineering profile

From calculating to advising, from delivering to leading. That calls for skills you are not used to displaying. Our article on this is called what kind of work suits me.

Convert your craft into a next step

Work preparation, estimating, teaching or a business of your own: skilled technical workers have more routes than they usually see. As background there is changing jobs.

Make your foreign qualification count

Applying for recognition and describing your experience in Dutch terms often makes more difference than another course. We map out what is required.

Coach Delft

After a forced departure

It feels like an ending; what comes next decides whether it is one.

A coach helps you use the change rather than endure it. You focus not on the uncertainty but on what is possible: a different perspective, new chances and work that fits who you are at this moment.

Many people run an outplacement programme alongside it to pick up pace. Outplacement supplies the structure and guidance with which you really do find new work.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about career coaching in Delft

How many conversations does it involve?

Four to six is usual, spread over two to four months. That spacing is necessary because you talk to people and try things out in between. Anyone who only wants to sharpen a choice sometimes manages with two. What a coach actually does in those sessions is covered under the role of the career coach.

What does it cost?

A scan will set you back 1,000 euro before VAT or more; carrying on costs proportionally more. The pricing per programme is on the costs page. The introductory conversation is free of charge.

Can it run in English?

Yes. Several of our coaches work entirely in English, which in this city is standard practice rather than an exception. Written material is then delivered in English too.

Will my employer contribute?

Frequently. Research institutions and technical companies generally hold a development budget, and many collective agreements include one. We put the quote in your name so you can submit it; the employer side is explained on this page.

Where is Care4Careers in Delft?

Marshalllaan 2, 2625 GZ Delft, in the southern part of the city. Parking is available and Delft Campus station is a short cycle away. Announce your visit in advance and the coach matching your background will be ready.

Is the Westland part of your patch, and Rijswijk?

Certainly. Rijswijk, Pijnacker, Nootdorp, Naaldwijk, Schipluiden, Den Hoorn and Maassluis fall inside the same area, and The Hague and Rotterdam are fifteen minutes away. For anyone living further out we run part of the sessions over video.

Do I need a career coach or rather help with applying?

It depends on where you are stuck. If you know where you want to go and only cannot get in, targeted search support is more effective. If the uncertainty is about the direction itself, coaching is the starting point. What to expect from our job search support versus a career coach is elsewhere.
